#sponsored Most business owners won't admit this, so I will: I hate looking at numbers.  I find it painful. My eyes glaze over.  My brain checks out. But as a business owner, I don't get to ignore them. The bigger a business gets, the harder it becomes to make sense of what's actually happening — more entities, more revenue streams, more reports, too many moving parts. If you've ever felt buried in spreadsheets, dashboards, and disconnected systems, you already know what I mean. That's why I partnered with Intuit to talk about @IntuitEnterpriseSuite — an AI-native, Intuit-backed ERP designed to help growing businesses shift reviewing their numbers from painful to painless. Every entity.  Every revenue stream.  Every business unit. Consolidated.  You can cut the data in any dimension — location, program, client, revenue stream — in real time, without building complicated spreadsheets. And it's designed to help you migrate in days, not months, without starting from scratch. The decisions you make are only as good as the data behind them. #IntuitEnterpriseSuite Learn more: https://intuit.me/3Su9Gqz 83 49I'm so excited to share that I'll be speaking at The Future of Design Summit this 25–28 August! We'll be talking about: • Attracting better clients • Pricing with confidence • Building a more profitable design business • AI, creativity and the future of our industry During the VIP session, I'll be doing a live Q&A session where I'll be answering your questions. Other VIP speakers include: Debbie Millman, Marty Neumeier, and Lisa Congdon. Make sure you register. Then show up the day of. Link in comment below. 419 63There’s no reason to attend a retreat. You don’t need coaching. Sooner or later you’ll figure it out. There’s honor in doing it the hard way. You’re a serial do-it-yourself-er. And if this is what you believe, skip this post. It’s not for you. But if your business feels a lot like pushing against an immovable object… If your content has fallen off a cliff or perhaps never caught on… If you are confused about your offer, positioning, differentiator— aka your brand… Then there’s another way. You don’t have to do this alone. It doesn’t have to be this difficult. Someone, somewhere, has gone through where you are now, has the scars to prove it, and has solved those exact problems. I get booked to do one on one coaching. It’s $5k/ hour. But it doesn’t excite me. Why? I believe the best ideas always comes from putting smart people in the room. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We tested that idea a few weeks ago with our first retreat cohort. And the experience left me energized. We built something cool together. And it was better than what I would’ve done on my own. Everyone wins. I’m excited to do this again. I’ll leave you with these 2 thoughts— “If nothing changes, nothing changes.” —Courtney C. Stevens & "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." —Einstein. 258 90“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” David Bowie So how did we lose our way? Why do we stray from being our true selves? My theory. We’ve been socialized to fit in, follow orders, and stay within the “norm”. And this is mostly the byproduct of the modern education system. It wasn’t designed to create autonomous, free thinking and creative people. It was designed to build human computers to work in a factory or fight in trench warfare. Completely anonymous and replaceable. The 21st century doesn’t need factory workers. They’re replaced by machines and robots. We need thinkers. Philosophers. Artists. Poets. This is your call to arms. Be the person you should have always been. This is what it means to work on your personal brand— To find your voice. Your identity. Your values. Your gift. To find yourself. Again. #personalbranding 506 112Isaac Asimov gave us the positronic brain, the three laws of robotics, and psychohistory (a way to forecast the probabilistic behavior of incredibly large populations). His worlds felt impossibly far away. I remember sitting in junior high, reading his stories, certain this was pure fiction. Here we are— Machines that understand language. Robots that move like us. Cars that drive themselves. I talk to my machines now. They understand my logic, my metaphors, and to some degree, my emotions. I'm chauffeured in autonomous vehicles and have never felt safer. Asimov wrote about societies that feared thinking machines. Characters who were nostalgic for how things used to be. There were always reasons for distrust in his books. The protagonist would work through it, and we'd come along for the ride. There are legitimate fears. But there are also incredible benefits. Technology in the hands of creative people with good intentions? Incredibly powerful and sometimes amazing works are produced. I've seen AI empower friends with ADHD, helping them design systems and develop tools that automate tedious tasks and generate ideas. For them, what once felt like a limitation has transformed into a powerful asset. They have found a way of working that is aligned with how they think. That excites me. I've been working with Stanley for months now. It's helped me become more intentional as a creator, removing the friction that used to slow me down. Stanley learns how you write. It helps you develop ideas that sound like you. It keeps your voice consistent across everything you create. If you're ready to see what that feels like: Start your 14-day free trial → https://lnkd.in/gN_5PTG7 We are now living in that future that I once dreamt about as a teenager. What technology felt impossible to you as a kid that you now use every day? #sponsored 163 76Sometimes you have a crazy idea… and what actually happens surpasses your expectations. That was the case with the inaugural launch of the Club Haus 2 day retreat. (The backstory) I bought my "dream home" a few months ago. Not to live in, but as the manifestation of a lot of ideas that I've been quietly shaping in my mind. But the dream home came at a price… and stretched us financially. I remember the call with our realtors very vividly. "Are you sitting down?" Yes. Then the long, dramatic, pause. "Congratulations. Jessie and Chris, the house is yours." I was filled with joy. Then reality sank in. Now what?! What are we going to do with this house? How will we pay for it? I don't believe in playing small. Safe is risky. Take chances. Dream an impossible dream. Even for me, this was a stretch. But I had faith that things would work out. We launched Club Haus. We invited strangers into our home and hosted them for 2 days. We talked for hours. We filled jumbo pads of paper with ideas. We shared stories and dreams and challenges. We broke bread. We laughed until our bellies hurt. All my fears of loud people "invading" our home, breaking things and creating a mess were unjustified. But that's how fear usually works. Errol Gerson once told his class that FEAR is just False Evidence Appearing Real. Or perhaps you've heard that FEAR means Face Everything And Rise! In my life I've learned that everything that you want is on the other side of fear. Fear is a signal that you're doing something worthwhile. Summon up your courage and march forward. It's been a few days now, but I'm still buzzing. We had an impossibly cool and creative group for our first retreat. A high bar was set. Am I crazy because I'm ready to do it again. Applications are open now for Aug 13-14. If you're ready to face your FEARs, I'll see you in Pasadena. Link in comment. Their work speaks for itself. More than qualified. But the moment a client asks "what do you charge?" — they freeze. Selling feels like a betrayal. I get it. I've been there before. For years, I struggled with "selling". Why? I didn't know the rules of engagement. Talking about money felt dirty (root of all evil and such). I was conflict adverse, so I punted the money conversation. My confidence wavered. The number got smaller before I even gave the prospect a chance to push back. I grew resentful as the scope kept creeping. Somehow I ended up doing more work for less money. I couldn't even get mad because it was by my own doing. All because I had a limiting belief about sales and needed some simple instructions that's aligned with being a creative introvert. I needed to learn about: • pricing • framing value • tone of voice • objection handling Obviously I figured it out. But I didn't do it on my own. From that day forward, I stopped hating sales and learned how to close clients. On August 6th, I'm running a full-day sales workshop "Natural Born Seller" in Vancouver for creative agency owners just like you. You might be on the fence, so let me guess… Objection 1: "It's too expensive." Relative to one new client, is the ticket price still to expensive? How much money are you leaving on the table— every lost bid, every time you undercut your own price. Objection 2: "I've seen you do it. But can I do it?" I've taught my creative directors. I've taught hundreds of others both online and in person. If you have an open mind, can follow directions, you can do this. Objection 3: "Sales feels gross." If it does then it's most likely because you've learned from someone who uses cheesy scripts, psychological manipulation and false urgency to get a sale. I'd hate it too. You've watched me do it time and time again. I can teach you a different way that's 100% permission based. Natural Born Seller Vancouver Aug. 6th Questions? Leave them in the comments below.
