For many founders deciding whether to build a company together, the "50 Questions to Explore with a Potential Co-Founder" has become something of a rite of passage. It covers everything from values and decision-making to personal motivation, conflict, finance and funding.    So when Nicholas Chirls asked me on the latest Origins minisode whether Thomas Kristensen and I had gone through this exercise before deciding to join forces, my answer probably surprised me more than Nick.    In short, we didn’t have to.    Thomas and I had already spent more than a decade answering those questions in the real world. We'd sat across LPAC tables, co-invested with many of the same managers, debated the venture market countless times and watched how each other’s teams made decisions over many years. By the time we started discussing bringing the Sapphire Partners team to LGT Capital Partners, the diligence had already been done.   As I mention in the episode, my North Star has always been simple: an LP's first responsibility is to be there for its GPs and clients over the long term. When you've spent years watching another team operate, you develop a pretty good sense of whether your philosophies align. For us, it did. And it didn't hurt that our teams shared many of the same values and had a natural synergy.    🎧 This 9-min listen is a good reminder that the most important signals often come long before a weekend offsite or list of questions. ▶️ Links to listen below! 32 3Anyone who knows me knows I love digging into venture data, which is why I was fascinated by this new research from Micah Rosenbloom and the team at Founder Collective analyzing the 500 largest startup exits from ~100,000 venture-backed companies over the past 25 years. 👏 This gives us a useful look at realized outcomes vs forecasting the future through predictive paper valuations. A few numbers worth noting: 🔹 $10T in value has been realized across the startup ecosystem over the last quarter-century. 🔹 The median value is $2.7 billion. 🔹 Only 3 startups are worth $1T+. 🔹 Around a dozen are worth $100B+. 🔹 Fewer than 100 are worth $10B+. 🔹 ~10% (50 startups) are worth less than $1B. And, the top 5 combined exits are larger than the next 495. Venture is built on predicting the future, so we understandably spend a lot of time on anticipated outcomes. This analysis does the opposite and shows what can we learn from the companies that have already delivered. Many of today's defining companies are staying private longer, with trillions of dollars still in unrealized value, so these rankings will inevitably change as liquidity events occur. We’ll be watching to see if the overall distribution of outcomes continues to look like this, or if the current private valuations are indeed paving the way for even bigger exits in the future. Full analysis 🔗: https://lnkd.in/guqCBSk4 66 10Venture has rarely looked more bifurcated. The latest PitchBook Venture Monitor shows AI continues to account for >60% of all U.S. venture deal value. Capital is concentrating around a handful of hot AI names while much of the rest of the market continues to navigate a very different fundraising and liquidity reality. Markets like these feel like periods of genuine uncertainty and those can demand a different lens for evaluating investment opportunities. That's what makes Alec Litowitz's Adaptability Quotient (AQ) especially relevant today. On the latest Origins, Alec, founder of Magnetar and Qstar Capital, and one of Citadel's original founding partners, shares the decision-making framework he's developed over 30+ years to distinguish between pricing risk and pricing uncertainty. As a SpaceX investor through QStar, and recently named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the "biggest winners from the SpaceX IPO," Alec also offers a firsthand perspective on one of venture's most consequential liquidity events. A few takeaways: 👉 Why venture remains one of the best ways to gain exposure to innovation 👉 How AI is changing what is (and isn't) investable 👉 Why liquidity is ultimately a function of time, not just markets 👉 The difference between pricing risk and resolving uncertainty If you're thinking about portfolio construction, AI, liquidity, or the genuine uncertainty around where venture goes from here, this episode is for you. 🎧 More links to listen in first comment: https://lnkd.in/gY2Ju6bB 21 2I've had a lot of convos with LPs over the past couple of years questioning venture amid the prolonged liquidity squeeze. Those who know me know I’ve always believed venture deserves a permanent seat in the portfolio, regardless of market cycle, and Miguel Luina, co-head of venture capital at Hamilton Lane ($1T AUA), just unpacked exactly why.    Venture and growth now make up roughly 1/3 of all private markets, a portion an institutional investor can no longer ignore. Value creation is now happening long before a stock becomes available in the public markets, and investors who wait are missing out on the opportunity to access the upside of disruption and the companies shaping the future economy.    A great episode with David Weisburd on “How I Invest” - check it out below 👇 60 1The Emerging Manager Summit is a very special event and community. Something I have deeply valued being able to attend over the years. Shout out to my fellow LPs to apply to be part of the selection crew. 44 4Folks ask me all the time how investors use AI. 🙏 Simon Schmincke for sharing in an amazing post on how his AI second brain works to supercharge him and his investments. He wanted to see how far the current generation of tools can be pushed. Local models, context optimization, a complete mirror of everything he has ever written, communicated, or emailed, plus every person he's ever been in touch with, in one system that helps him navigate work and private life. Very very impressive. A must read 👇💫✨ 11 1👋 Everyone…  I've been quiet over the last month+ settling into my new home at LGT Capital Partners, but now I’m back. For those less familiar, LGT Capital Partners is a $120B private asset manager whose roots date back to the 12th century. That heritage fosters an investing perspective measured in decades vs market cycles, and part of what drew me to the firm was its long-term conviction in venture. Well before the excitement of the SpaceX mega IPO (and the anticipated upcoming ones from Anthropic and OpenAI), LGT Capital Partners was doubling down on venture while some were questioning it amid years of illiquidity.   Many of you that have been following OpenLP over the past decade+ know that my team shares that perspective - and the good news is… OpenLP came with us, and Origins came too - so we get to continue these conversations together.   This transition has given me an excuse to dig deeper into a question I’ve long been asked and often considered myself: Is the endowment model (popularized by the late David Swenson, Yale CIO) still viable?   Nicholas Chirls and I explored this on the latest Origins with my new colleague and partner, Thomas Kristensen, who leads the venture capital platform at LGT Capital Partners and invests on behalf of clients alongside the Princely Family’s $20B endowment.   His take: The core principles of the endowment model remain intact, but the toolkit has greatly expanded.   As capital markets continue to evolve, companies are staying private longer, and meaningful value creation is occurring well before an IPO. It’s a core reason LGT is leaning further into venture, supported by the fact that secondaries have evolved into a sophisticated liquidity tool. According to thoughtful research from Tomasz Tunguz, secondaries accounted for just 3% of exit value in 2015. Last year, they represented ~1/3 (!) of all US VC exit value, alongside M&A (35%) and IPOs (34%).   My take: The venture market is maturing and following a path PE has been on for years, recognizing that there are multiple routes to liquidity, be it direct, GP-led or LP-led secondaries, co-invests or continuation vehicles. While many investors are still building expertise around these strategies, I’ve long admired that LGT has been on its front foot with dedicated teams specializing in these solutions for 25 years.    Thomas is brilliant, and if I haven’t gushed enough already, this episode perfectly encapsulates why I’m so energized about this next chapter.    For those that are venture-curious, or already extremely well-versed, there’s a strong case in here for increased allocation to venture.    Check it out below👇   🎙️ Origins: Fund Commitments, Co-Invest & Secondaries: The $120B LP Playbook https://lnkd.in/gJPM2Vka 124 9Venture investing is often framed as a strategy game, but it is just as much an exercise in emotional calibration - and who you have behind you matters. Nicholas Chirls and I got into this in our latest Origins minisode after Nicholas Csicsko (LP, Trinity Church) introduced a framing I hadn’t heard before: “cynical optimism” — a counter to Silicon Valley’s long-celebrated culture of unbridled optimism. And I realized pretty quickly that I translate the “cynical” part into realism. There’s a difference between conviction and refusing to acknowledge what’s changing around you. To support this, Nick thoughtfully articulated the role of a VC not as “cheerleader” but emotional counterweight. A great VC isn't endlessly rosy, or 100% doom-and-gloom. They're someone who can see around corners and keep you balanced: 👉 Pushing founders to anticipate challenges when things are euphoric 👉 Helping restore perspective when things feel impossible 👉 Providing a different lens for what’s ahead That same dynamic exists for LPs with their GPs. The job is not cheering GPs on, but helping them get down the field as successfully as possible — while also being honest about cycles, risks, timing, and changing market realities.
